De laatste dagen Down Under…
Vanuit Alice Springs ben ik donderdagochtend vroeg naar Avalon, het tweede vliegveld van Melbourne. Aangezien dit vliegveld wat verder van de stad ligt, stond een aansluitende busrit op het programma. Rond een uur of twee stond ik dan eindelijk op het Southern Cross station, midden in Melbourne. Vanuit daar moest ik bij m’n hostel zien te komen. Ik was natuurlijk vergeten de routebeschrijving uit te printen of het adres op te schrijven en wist alleen dat het hostel in St. Kilda (een van de buitenwijken aan het strand) op St. Kilda Road lag. Aangezien dat een zeer lange weg is, die vanuit St. Kilda naar het stadscentrum loopt (te vergelijken met een Rijksweg in een willekeurige Nederlandse plaats), kom je daar niet zo ver mee. Met behulp van een aantal zeer hulpvaardige Melbourners, die hulpeloos ogende backpackers op eigen initiatief van routebeschrijvingen komen voorzien, wist ik uiteindelijk een tram te vinden die me naar St. Kilda zou brengen. Ik kan jullie wel vertellen dat het een hele tour is om bepakt en bezakt (backpack op de rug, daypack op de buik) in een overvolle tram te blijven staan. Uiteindelijk bleek dit natuurlijk net die ene tram naar St. Kilda te zijn die ik net niet moest hebben; dus ben ik blijven zitten totdat hij omkeerde en ben ergens in de buurt van St. Kilda Road uitgestapt. Nu had ik meer geluk: na een tiental minuten lopen zag ik mijn hostel al liggen.. Na het inchecken ben ik meteen achter de computer gekropen om te checken of er nog Nederlanders op de Australian Open actief waren en het geluk was weer aan m’n zijde: de volgende dag zou Robin Haase het opnemen tegen Andy Roddick. Het is natuurlijk altijd leuk om een interessante wedstrijd mee te pikken en vooral als je dan ook nog eens landgenoten kunt aanmoedigen. De prijs van het kaartje voor de Hisense Arena viel me heel erg mee: $ 55 voor drie wedstrijden (naast Haase-Roddick, speelden die dag ook nog Djokovic en Sjarapova). Nadat ik het kaartje had veilig gesteld ben ik de buurt gaan verkennen. St. Kilda is een artistiek wijkje aan de zee met veel boutiekjes, restaurantjes, bakkerijtjes en cafeetjes, erg gezellig dus.. De avond heb ik besteed aan het doen van m’n was; na een aantal dagen in de outback en met de Australian Open in het vooruitzicht was dat ook had nodig!
Vrijdagochtend was ik redelijk vroeg uit de veren, maar omdat de andere negen medekamergenoten nogal van uitslapen houden, had ik nogal wat opstartproblemen (het zoeken van je spullen in het donker gaat niet zo snel). Rond 10 uur, iets later dan gepland, ging ik op weg naar het terrein van de Australian Open. De eerste wedstrijd van die dag (die van Djokovic) zou om 11.00 uur beginnen; dus ruim op tijd zou je zeggen… Op het terrein van de Australian Open valt echter zoveel te beleven: van eettentjes en een Heineken beer-garden tot stands met merchandise en reclamemateriaal en alles in een geweldige ambiance, waardoor ik nogal afgeleid en pas om 11.30 uur bij de Hisense Arena arriveerde. Toen ik echter m’n plaatsje in de volle zon had opgezocht, bleek dat ik al te laat was voor de wedstrijd van Djokovic: z’n tegenstander had al na een set opgegeven. De wedstrijd tussen Haase en Roddick zou dus al meteen beginnen en uiteindelijk werd het een geweldige wedstrijd! De eerste set werd, ondanks een blessurebehandeling, op glansrijke wijze gewonnen door Haase. Hij liet Roddick alle hoeken van het veld zien en brak z’n service twee keer. Dat Roddick een onsportief naar mannetje is, wist ik al, maar het sloeg alles toen hij uit pure frustatie een bal recht op het gezicht van Haase af smashte. Die actie viel natuurlijk ook niet goed bij het Australische publiek.. De tweede set ging redelijk gelijk op, al had Haase hier ook het betere van het spel. Uiteindelijk bleken z’n zenuwen hem toch parten te spelen: hij sloeg twee dubbele fouten in de tiebreak, waardoor Roddick op vrij eenvoudige wijze de winst in de tweede set wist te pakken. Uiteindelijk bleek dat ook het breekpunt in de wedstrijd te zijn en de twee volgende sets gingen eigenlijk vrij gemakkelijk naar Roddick (die steeds beter ging serveren). Haase had af en toe nog een geweldige passeerslag, maar had mede door z’n enkelblessure niet veel meer in te brengen. Erg jammer, maar hij heeft mij (en met mij nog een handjevol andere Nederlanders in het stadion) een geweldige middag bezorgd! Na deze wedstrijd ben ik even een kijkje gaan nemen op de andere velden en m’n interesse werd gewekt door de wat grotere drukte bij een van de velden waar geen wedstrijd gepland was. Het bleek dat Andy Murray, de nummer vier van de plaatsingslijst daar ana het trainen was; dus daar ben ik ook even blijven hangen natuurlijk en dat werd beloond met een handtekening en gezamenlijke foto. In de tussentijd was ik iemand tegengekomen die een kaartje had voor de Rod Laver Arena, maar daar geen gebruik meer van ging maken. Ik kon met dat kaartje nog net de laatste set van wedstrijd van Roger Federer meepikken, erg leuk! Na afloop van die wedstrijd ben ik nog even teruggekeerd naar de Hisense Arena, waar ik nog een paar games van de wedstrijd van Sjarapova heb meegepikt. Rond uur uur of acht ben ik moe maar voldaan teruggekeerd naar m’n hostel, het was echt een geweldige dag!
Op zaterdagochtend ben ik de binnenstad van Melbourne ingegaan om allereerst in financiele zin orde op zaken te stellen (die vervelende kredietlimieten om creditcards ook, wederom bedankt mam en pap!). Daarna heb ik een aantal uur door de stad (met name Chinatown) gewandeld en alvast wat souveniertjes voor mezelf gekocht. Tegen een uur of drie ben ik weer teruggekeerd naar m’n hostel om, gezien het mooie weer, nog even een strandwandeling te kunnen maken. ‘s Avonds heb ik gezond gekookt in m’n hostel (pasta met tonijn) en ‘s avonds tennis gekeken.
Zondag stond gepland als de grote shoppingdag worden. Vanuit m’n hostel hem ik de tram richting stad genomen en onderweg ben ik overgestapt op de gratis toeristenbus, die een rondje van bijna 1,5 uur door en om de stad maakt. Een van de laatste stops was de Queen Victoria Markets, een grote overdekte markt, waar je werkelijk alles wat je je maar kunt bedenken kunt kopen. Hiermee had ik twee vliegen in een klap geslagen: en veel gezien van Melbourne en aangekomen bij het shopping walhalla, waar ik uiteindelijk het grootste deel van de dag heb doorgebracht.
Voor maandag had ik een tou geboekt om per bus de Great Ocean Road, een kustweg tussen Melbourne en Adelaide, te gaan verkennen. We vertrokken in de regen, maar gedurende de ochtend klaarde de lucht op. Bells Beach en de Memorial Arch zagen we nog in de regen, maar bij de koala stop was het al zonnig en bij de belangrijkste stop: The 12 Apostels was het ronduit schitterdend weer. Je kon daar voor $ 75 een korte helicoptervlucht langs de kust (en over de Apostels) maken en aangezien ik nog nooit in een helicopter had gezeten, kon ik dit buitenkansje niet aan m’n neus voorbij laten gaan. Ik zat voorin naast de piloot, waar je het beste uitzicht had en ik moet zeggen dat het geweldig was om alles zo van bovenaf te kunnen bekijken! Vervolgens hebben we nog een korte stop gemaakt bij de (inmiddels ingestorte) London Bridge, waarna we via een kortere weg terug zijn gereden naar Melbourne. Ook dit was weer een mooie dag..
Op dinsdag, de laatste dag van m’n verblijf in Melbourne, heb ik in de ochtend wat dingetjes gekocht in St. Kilda en rond het middaguur heb ik de tram richting de stad genomen, waar ik nog even een laatste souvenier moest veilig stellen. Dat kostte heel wat pijn en moeite, maar het is wel gelukt. Ik had, gezien de geweldige dag die ik vrijdag op de Australian Open heb gehad, besloten mijn laatste middag daar door te brengen; dus kocht ik voor $ 29 een ground pass, waarmee ik toegang had tot alle buitenvelden. Ook zijn er grote schermen waar de wedstrijden die op het Centre Court gespeeld worden, worden uitgezonden. Ook waren het jeugdtoernooi en legendstoernooi inmiddels begonnen en ik had in een programmaboekje gelezen dat Paul Haarhuis en Jacco Elthingh de laatste wedstrijd van de dag op het Margareth Court moesten spelen tegen Pioline en ; dus dat wilde ik natuurlijk graag zien. In de tussentijd heb ik de tijd wat gedood door langs de diverse velden waar de jeudgwedstrijden op gesteeld werden te lopen, totdat ik ergens op een veld zonder publiek Nederlands hoorde spreken. Ik keek op en kreeg meteen de reactie: ‘Ja hoor, die spreekt Nederlands’ en drie keer raden: het waren Haarhuis en Elthingh die aan de warming up voor hun wedstrijd bezig waren. Ik ben daar uiteindelijk naar blijven kijken en na een tijdje kwam hun Nederlandse gelegenheidscoach Patrick Zwaanswijk ook erbij zitten. Toen ze vroegen of ik van hun drieën een foto willen maken, heb ik natuurlijk meteen van de gelegenheid gebruik gemaakt om ook met hen op de foto te gaan; je komt immers niet elke dag grand Sam winnaars tegen, haha. Naast de foto heb ik ook nog een wedstrijdbal (die Jacco me toespeelde tijdens de wedstrijd) gescoord, al met al een gedenkwaardige dag, een mooie afsluiting voor mijn Australië avontuur!
